Ascending, descending The building seems solid enough, but when you examine it you see that the monks are ascending or descending forever. Escher didn't invent the endless staircase but he managed to draw it in a very appealing way. The inventors of the endless stairs were L.S. and Roger Penrose in 1958.

If you are interested in Escher, this is the book for you. The author made it together with Escher himself. It shows the periods and styles in his life, and shows his thoughts when making his famous images. Which contained surprisingly little maths.
