Latest News -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sept. 11, 1999 SERIE A MATCH PREVIEWS: Lippi's Inter squares off with Capello's Roma Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Reuters News Service By Gideon Long ROME (September 10, 1999 9:52 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Marcello Lippi locks horns with his old adversary Fabio Capello on Sunday (1830 GMT) when Inter Milan tackles AS Roma at the Olympic Stadium in the first big clash of the Serie A season. Lippi has set about transforming Inter since he arrived in the close season and it started its championship bid with an emphatic 3-0 win over Verona two weeks ago. Capello, back at one of the clubs where he made his name as a player, saw his side labor to a 1-1 draw at Piacenza in its opening fixture. Last season's corresponding clash produced one of the most memorable matches of the season -- a 5-4 victory for Inter -- while its tie at the San Siro ended 4-1 to Inter after Roma had led 1-0 at halftime. Christian Vieri picked up a slight muscle strain playing for Italy in midweek but should start though Inter will be without Roberto Baggio (groin) and Vladimir Jugovic. Midfielder Luigi di Biagio should start for Inter against the club he left less a fortnight ago but Roma's Brazilian defender Zago is supended. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sept. 09, 1999 Roberto Baggio may be sidelined for Inter's game against Roma on Sunday at Rome's Olympic Stadium. The former European and World Footballer player of the year has re-aggrevated a muscle. Baggio will miss practice for the next couple of days and will require rest to properly heal the injury. Attacking duties will fall upon Ivano Zamarano and Recoba while Vieri and Ronaldo come back from international duty. 3 of the 4 will probably see time on the field. Let's just hope that Roberto can overcome injury by Sunday. By Vince Micieli The ROBERTO BAGGIO Web-Site -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sept. 04, 1999 Today under heavy rain, Inter experimented with the 3-4-1-2 formation with Baggio and Recoba as attackers and won 11-0 against Corsico thanks to 5 goals by Roberto Baggio, 2 by Recoba, 1 by Russo, and one each by Moriero and DiBiagio. The match was 80 minutes ( 40 minute halves) Jugovic, the former Juventus midfielder, played behind the forwards. This game was played to experiment with the new 3-4-1-2 formation and to see if Baggio and Recoba can play together up front. By Vince Micieli The ROBERTO BAGGIO Web-Site -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vieri gets hat-trick for Inter; AC Milan held to 2-2 draw Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Agence France-Press By TREVOR HUGGINS MILAN (August 29, 1999 1:22 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Christian Vieri started repaying his world record $50-million transfer fee in style on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick on his debut as Inter Milan whipped new boys Verona 3-0. Champions AC Milan were held to a 2-2 draw at newly-promoted Lecce, despite a goal from $22-million Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko, while two other title hopefuls, Parma and AS Roma, both drew 1-1. There was no shortage of thrills at the San Siro where a delirious crowd saw Vieri erase all the bad memories of last season's disastrous campaign. The three goals were identical, all coming from long balls punted 30 or 40 metres upfield for Vieri to run on and score. Vieri opened the scoring in the 16th minute, while his stand-in strike partner Ivan Zamorano hit the woodwork just minutes later. Zamorano made way for Ronaldo, who is still short of match fitness, at the start of the second half but it was Vieri who continued to find the target, scoring again in the 53rd and 65th minutes. Inter coach Marcello Lippi said: "We weren't depressed about the fact that we didn't have a brilliant pre-season run and we're not euphoric now. "But it was a good win. Everybody knows how hard it is against a team who have just been promoted to Serie A." Lippi, who is having to build a new team and system of play largely from scratch, said: "For us at the moment, it's all work-in-progress. But what I've seen so far is looking good." AC Milan, watched by Italy's holidaying Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema, were not so fortunate in the first league match of their centenary season. Milan took the lead when Liberian veteran George Weah hit the post and then drilled the rebound into the roof of the net, but Lecce were level about five minutes later with a fine header through defender Alberto Savino. The Italian champions looked set for victory in the 72nd minute when Weah hooked a high cross into the area, Oliver Bierhoff headed the ball down and Shevchenko swept it home. But Lecce came storming back and Cristiano Lucarelli pounced on a loose ball in the Milan area to fire home an 81st minute equalizer. Milan's disappointed coach Alberto Zaccheroni looked ready to have a few words with his men this week. "They (Lecce) were sharper and more determined than we were," he said. "We lacked attention and just weren't in the match as much as they were." Dismissing the steamy conditions, he said: "The heat was the same for both sides, even though we have been playing at night recently. The problem was more in our approach to the game." The draw proved to be only one of several surprises on the opening weekend. AS Roma skipper Francesco Totti scored the first goal of the millennium season, driving home a 14th minute penalty against perennial strugglers Piacenza. But Fabio Capello's men were caught out by Giovanni Stroppa's superb 82nd minute free-kick into the roof of the net and had to settle for a draw. Parma, freshly knocked out of the European Champions League qualifiers by Glasgow Rangers, needed Croatian Mario Stanic to nod home a late equalizer after Renato Olive had chipped lowly Perugia into a 46th minute lead. However, Fiorentina made no such mistake against battling Bari -- new striker Enrico Chiesa poking home the only goal of the match on his debut. Coach Giovanni Trapattoni, forced to rest skipper and star striker Gabriel Batistuta, was just happy to be going home with three points after his side were given a rough ride by the southerners. "I think most of the other teams found it hard today," he said. "And this was an important match for us." Bari coach Eugenio Fascetti lamented: "We played well and put on a good performance, so it is disappointing to have lost. But we made one mistake and Chiesa punished us for it." Filippo Maniero's late equalizer earned Venezia a 1-1 draw with Udinese, who took the lead with a tap-in by new signing Roberto Muzzi, while Juventus were due to open in the night match against newcomers Reggina. Lazio, who toppled Manchester United in the European Super Cup on Friday night, play on Monday against Cagliari. August 26, 1999 By Vince Micieli INTER WINS LAST FRIENDLY Inter played in their last friendly today before the start of their Serie A campaign against Verona Sunday. Inter cruised to a 3-1 victory with goals coming from Sousa, Ivan Zamorano, and Greek international Georgatos. This marks the end of Inter's exhibition games which have shown that despite all of the transfer market spending, Inter has not shaken off their defensive problems that they experienced in the 98 season. Here is the line-up in which most of the top players were present for Inter. Peruzzi (46' Ferron) Panucci (63' West) Blanc (80' Camara) Domoraud (46' Simic) Georgatos (80' Silvestre) Zanetti J. (63' Moriero) Zanetti C.Sousa (80' Dabo) Cauet Vieri (46' Zamorano) Ronaldo (46' Baggio) August 26, 1999 Italian coaches seek dream duo Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Agence France-Press By TREVOR HUGGINS MILAN (August 25, 1999 9:48 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - They may have the world's most expensive strike pair in Ronaldo and Christian Vieri, but Inter Milan aren't the only Italian team counting on a marriage made in heaven this season. In Italy, the two men up front are known as "goal couples" and every Serie A chairman wants one. Money has changed hands at an alarming rate this summer as clubs look desperately for a partnership to set the league on fire. The spotlight is bound to land on Inter, who have the best couple on paper. Ronaldo was the most devastating striker in Europe before being laid low last season by inflamed tendons, a painful sequel to the World Cup finals. Now recovered, the Brazilian faces the challenge of returning to his world class form after Inter almost broke the bank to build a team around him. "I want to have a great season," Ronaldo said. "I deserve it, after all I've been through." Ronaldo will be helped by the presence of Vieri, the brawny, bustling centre-forward of Dino Zoff's national side who is bound to distract attention and defensive marking away from his teammate. "I'm not the sort who goes around making predictions," said Vieri. "But if the pair of us can stay fit, we are going to have fun, that's for sure." The two men can also count on creative support from the likes of Roberto Baggio and Uruguayan Alvaro Recoba. The dream of landing a partnership worth about 60 goals a season has already come true for Juventus, who will again turn to Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi. Del Piero should be back in league action on Sunday for the first time since injury in November, 1998. The Italian idol scored one and made another for Inzaghi on his recent return in the Intertoto tournament, while his superb winner over AC Milan in the Berlusconi Trophy was just what the doctor ordered. Inzaghi, Italy's most dangerous man in the six-yard area, is meanwhile on fine form, scoring half of Juventus' 14 goals in their Intertoto campaign. And "SuperPippo" warned their rivals: "Nine months have gone by and yet with Del Piero everything is just as it was before. We can find each other with our eyes closed." The deadly duo will again be backed by the creative skills of France's World Cup and Golden Ball winner Zinedine Zidane. Parma fans are pinning their hopes on Brazilian Marcio Amoroso, the Serie A's top scorer last season, who has arrived from Udinese to partner Hernan Crespo of Argentina. Crespo, like Inzaghi, is wonderfully agile and has a knack of being in the right place at the right time, while Amoroso is quick on the break, a good dribbler and blessed with a potent right-foot shot. Lazio have five attacking options between Roberto Mancini, Chilean Marcelo "the Matador" Salas, Croatian Alen Boksic, back from long-term injury, plus new signings Simone Inzaghi, younger brother of Juve's Filippo, and Bologna's Swedish giant Kennet Andersson. Inzaghi jr.'s stock is high after combining well with Salas, Boksic and Andersson in pre-season friendlies. Coach Sven Goran Eriksson said: "This really is a strong Lazio squad. We know Salas, Mancini and Boksic well, Andersson has a lot of experience in Italy and I'm convinced Inzaghi will be the revelation of the season." Though twosomes are still popular, many coaches are also turning to threesomes in their search for goals. Fiorentina hero Gabriel Batistuta has two new partners in Yugoslav Predrag Mijatovic and Italy's Enrico Chiesa. Mijatovic is a natural finisher while Chiesa is devastatingly fast down the wing and has one of the best long-range drives, with either foot, in the Serie A. Batistuta is nevertheless the figurehead for a team who dominated last season until he suffered a knee injury in February. The Argentinian has a great tactical sense while only Lazio's ballistic free-kick specialist Sinisa Mihajlovic can match "Batigol" for firepower. Roma are also opting for a trident with talented newcomer Vincenzo Montella, Marco Delvecchio, a man so unpopular last season that he was once booed by the home crowd for scoring a goal, and local hero Francesco Totti, now an international. Totti, the skipper, tends to move in from further back while Delvecchio and Montella, who hit 43 goals in 63 matches for Sampdoria before ankle surgery last October, are both good finishers. AC Milan have added Dynamo Kiev's Andriy Shevchenko, the man who knocked holders Real Madrid out of last season's European Cup, to their line-up of German Oliver Bierhoff, the best header of the ball in Italy, and Liberian veteran George Weah. Shevchenko has ball skills and speed, but Bierhoff should still wear the trousers in Milan's odd couple. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The serious money is still in Serie A Presidents of Italian clubs are among the most outspoken figures in football, so it is surprising they can afford to put their money where their mouths are. August 24, 1999 But this summer Serie A's finest have broken every transfer record in the book, offended the Pope and shown the Premiership what splashing out really means. The new Serie A season kicks off on Saturday and six teams alone will field new signings costing nearly £300 million. While Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds spent £94m, Juventus, Internazionale, AC Milan, Parma, Lazio, and Fiorentina, forked out almost three times as much - £269m. In all, nine out of the top 10 transfers involved players joining Italian sides, eight of whom set new club-record fees. Premiership fees are small beer beside £31m Vieri The Premiership's biggest deal, Thierry Henry's move from Juventus to Arsenal for £10m, limped in at 11th place. Liverpool were the biggest spenders but their £25m outlay is dwarfed by the £65m Inter spent. Indeed, Liverpool's entire budget would not have stretched to the signing of Christian Vieri, who joined Inter for a world-record fee of £31m. The deal that took the striker from Lazio to the San Siro was condemned by the Pope as an insult to the poor but Inter owner Massimo Morrati did not stop there. Christian Panucci arrived from Real Madrid for £9m and goalkeeper Angelo Perruzi joined from Juventus for £10m to link up with his old manager Marcello Lippi. Not content to partner Vieri with Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo up front, Lippi then signed another Juventus old boy, Vladimir Jugovic, from Atletico Madrid and finished off with Marseille's French international defender, Laurent Blanc. Parma spent £21m to lure Marcio Amoroso from Udinese and AC Milan signed Andrei Shevchenko for £18m from Dynamo Kiev. Striker Vincenzo Montella joined Roma along with Walter Samuel in deals worth £28m. Overall, fallen Turin giants Juventus have spent £50m and Parma have bought nine new players worth £54m. Last year it was Lazio who broke the Banca di Roma spending more than £70m on the most expensive side in history. Owner Sergio Cragnotti's reaction to watching his pricey players let the Scudetto slip through their fingers was hardly surprising. The tomato sauce magnate missed out on Nicolas Anelka but has spent £40m this summer in another bid to end the Milan-Juventus dominance of the Italian League, including £19m on Argentine Juan Veron. Manchester United signed just one player after winning the treble - goalkeeper Mark Bosnich on a free - and have been haggling with Roy Keane over his demands for £2m-a-year wages. In contrast, champions AC Milan have spent £30m on seven new players while Inter have no problem paying Christian Vieri £3.7m a year - after tax. Italian clubs have always pushed the boundaries but this year Serie A has pulled even further ahead, leaving the supposedly cash-rich Premiership trailing. Why? Part of the answer lies in the pay-per-view contracts that Italian clubs struck last year and which come into effect this weekend, deals that dwarf the payments BSkyB make to the Premiership. Manchester United, the world's richest club, receive around £10m in television revenue from the Premier League's deal with Sky - but AC Milan expect a gigantic £61m a year from their new payper-view deal with Teleplu. Although the Sky deal is worth roughly the same as Teleplu's, at £750m, the cake will be split between just seven clubs in Serie A, not 22 as in England. The result is that the Italian sides who have signed up with Teleplu, including Inter, Juventus, Milan and Napoli, are getting a far bigger slice than big English clubs. Parma, Lazio, Fiorentina and Roma have signed a rival deal with Stream TV for £340m and with the traditional Italian weekend of Sunday fixtures ending this year, pay-per-view is up and running in Serie A. Last month's victory for the Premier League against the Office of Fair Trading may have delayed the day when Premiership clubs can negotiate their own pay-TV deals, much to the annoyance of several chairmen. The result is that Italian clubs now have access to huge sums of money to gamble on the transfer market and English sides, with one or two exceptions, are being priced out of the market. Italian clubs are better equipped to exploit the riches of pay-TV than quoted plcs who must keep shareholders and the City happy. Serie A sides are happy to run at a loss or just break even. For example, last year United posted profits of £27m, Juventus made £650,000 and Milan lost £9m - but the Italian clubs still lead the way in the transfer market. In Italy, only Lazio have floated on the Stock Market leaving the other super-clubs to spend their income down to the last lira, confident that a billionaire chairman will bail them out. In England, there are men such as Jack Walker who are seriously rich and able to indulge their passions in football, but they cannot compare with Italians like Gianni Agnelli, the chairman of Juventus, who owns Fiat and Ferrari (the companies that is, not just a couple of cars). After Rupert Murdoch's takeover bid for United was rejected, chairman Martin Edwards complained the club would not be able to compete on a global scale. He might just be right. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 23, 1999 By Vince Micieli Yesterday at Inter's training facility, Ronaldo scored twice and Moriero, Pirlo,, Recoba, and Roberto Baggio added singles as well as an own goal by the amateur side made Inter big winners. Lippi experimented with the 3-4-1-2 formation with Baggio alternating as a link up man and striker during the 80 minute match. In previous matches Inter has been criticised as being weak in defence and out of match shape. THE ROBERTO BAGGIO WEBSITE http://www.worldchat.com/public/vincem/vb1.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 1, 1999 Real edges Inter on Morientes rebound in injury time Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Reuters News Service By SIMON EVANS MILAN (July 31, 1999 5:51 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - An injury-time goal from Fernando Morientes bought Real Madrid a 3-2 win over Inter Milan in a friendly Saturday at San Siro. Both teams fielded strong sides with several summer signees. Inter, under new coach Marcello Lippi, featured its world-record signee Christian Vieri in attack but was without Brazilian Ronaldo, who was resting after the Copa America. It was two of Real's new faces who combined to help open the scoring in the 21st minute. England international Steve McManaman was brought down after a weaving run down the right and Inter keeper Fabrizio Ferron could only parry Bosnian Elvir Bolic's fierce free kick with Raul making no mistake as he followed up. Inter enjoyed the better of the early possession and drew level in the 30th when Vieri tapped in from close range after Alvaro Recoba headed a Francesco Moriero cross into his path. But straight from the restart Morientes latched onto a through ball from Raul and blasted past Ferron. With both teams looking lively in attack but shaky on defense, Inter could have drawn level in the 36th minute when Vieri put Roberto Baggio in on goal but he sliced wide. A stream of substitutions spoiled what had promised to be a fascinating second half but the drama was saved for the final minute. Inter substitute Andrea Pirlo jinked into the penalty area and fired a powerful shot past Real keeper Bodo Illgner and seemed to have given Inter a draw. But in injury time a low shot from Real substitute Guti was pushed out by Ferron and Morientes pounced -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 22, 1999 Baggio Hopes Inter's Nightmare Is Over MILAN, Italy (July 21, 1999 9:46 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com) - Roberto Baggio is looking to make amends to Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti after what he called a "nightmare" season with the club. Baggio's arrival from Bologna last summer helped to make Inter the pundits' favorite for the Serie A title. But injuries to both Baggio and Ronaldo - along with a run of dismal results and four consecutive coaches - made it one of the club's worst seasons for decades. Now the team has been re-built under new coach Marcello Lippi and Baggio is keen to repay a few debts. "Last season people talked about Inter too much," he said. "And what could be an advantage for us now is that this season Inter are seen as just one of the favorites, and not the favorites. "When I said last year that we had a great team it was true. But then the problems started and they ended up ruining everything: the season became a nightmare, nothing went right and even the easiest things became complicated and even embarassing." A divided locker-room was one of the major problems, but Baggio preferred to remain silent. "I know what happened," he said. "But it wouldn't be right for me to explain it." But asked if he felt indebted, he admitted: "Yes, I do. To Inter, but also to Moratti. If I'm fortunate enough to be playing in a big team once again, I owe it to him." Baggio will, meanwhile, have to build a new relationship with Lippi - one of the men held responsible by many for Baggio's unexpected departure from Juventus in 1995, usurped by his then understudy Alessandro Del Piero. Playing down his first chat with Lippi at Inter, Baggio said: "He didn't say anything in particular: just that I was part of his plans and that I would be staying ... I've had far fewer problems with coaches than people make out; I had four of them last season, ask them." Baggio won the league with Lippi in their last season together, playing alongside Turin heroes Gianluca Vialli and Fabrizio Ravanelli. Next season, he will join another all-star attack with Christian Vieri and Ronaldo, and the parallels have inevitably been drawn. "Let's just say that there's good reason to think that some things could be repeated," he said. "(Ronaldo and Vieri) are both two great players, but Inter fans have had enough of dreams. After what happened last season, I'd rather just wait and see. You can't take anything for granted." Baggio, 32, has another year of his contract at Inter, but no plans, or need, to retire. His kind of creative genius remains a rare thing, even in Italian football. "I think that soccer has always lived on creativity," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "Having an organized system of play is fundamental, but at the same time, it's the thing that's 'different', that's unexpected, which brings people to matches and makes them love football." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 21, 1999 Click here for the latest up date on Roby in Italian, there are pictures and a Real video here as well! EURO 2000 QUALIFYING: Italy coach wants goals against Belarus Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Reuters News Service ROME (March 29, 1999 10:15 a.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - Italy looks set to go for goals in Wednesday's European championship qualifier against Belarus. Coach Dino Zoff said he would make "several changes" to his team and praised young AS Roma playmaker Francesco Totti, who went on late and set up Antonio Conte's winner in Saturday's 2-1 group one victory over Denmark in Copenhagen. "The future is his, because if he keeps playing at this level he will have a place in this team," said Zoff. Newspapers speculated that Totti would line up behind Juventus striker Filippo Inzaghi, who scored Italy's other goal, and either Marco Delvecchio or Roberto Baggio. Other possible changes included the use of Conte from the start in place of Parma midfielder Diego Fuser, and Udinese's Jonathan Bachini for Roma's Eusebio Di Francesco. The goal was sweet revenge for Conte, who broke his leg in his last Italy appearance in 1997 and was subsequently dropped from the squad defensive-minded former boss Cesare Maldini took to the World Cup. Zoff rejected criticism that he had been too defensive against Denmark, which had pinned Italy back for much of the match. "I have never been prudent, nor do I have an old-fashioned approach," Zoff said. "But I do know how international matches are played and that there are circumstances in which a team are forced to defend," he was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport. "I am the first to say we should have pushed forward more, but when you play a good side away like Denmark, they're going to attack." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 3, 1999 Two-goal Yorke leads United towards semifinals MANCHESTER, England, March 3 (Reuters) Manchester United took a step towards the semifinals of the European Cup when two headed goals from Dwight Yorke gave them a 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the first leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday. United, who have never eliminated an Italian club from European competition, had the better of a match played at a frenetic pace for 90 minutes and should have won by a far bigger margin. Inter still have a chance of saving the tie in the second leg in Milan in two weeks but will have to show a huge improvement after being caught out by Yorke after seven and 45 minutes. Both goals were created by accurate right-wing crosses from David Beckham. United had a lucky escape after 66 minutes when Diego Simeone headed the ball into the net from a corner but German referee Hellmut Krug had already blown for a foul by a team mate. United keeper Peter Schmeichel made one outstanding save to prevent Ivan Zamorano scoring with a diving header after 49 minutes and substitute Henning Berg blocked a shot from Francesco Collonese on the line in injury time of a match shown live in more than 100 countries across the world. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baggio's back for Italy! ROME, Feb 7 (AFP) - Roberto Baggio got his first call-up for Italy since September on Sunday night, when his coach Dino Zoff's picked him for a friendly next week against Norway. Baggio, who was a late substitute against Wales at Anfield, is likely to renew what was a successful partnership at the World Cup finals with Lazio centre-forward Christian Vieri. Vieri has made a scintillating return from injury over the last two months, his goals propelling Lazio to second place in the Serie A behind leaders Fiorentina. Both he and Baggio scored on Sunday, Vieri in a 3-0 win over Perugia and Baggio in Inter Milan's 5-1 demolition of Empoli. With Juventus stars Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi both out through injury, Zoff has decided to stick by out-of-form Francesco Totti and Parma's Enrico Chiesa for his other attacking options. The one new face in the squad for Wednesday night's match in Pisa is Bari's Gianluca Zambrotta, a promising midfielder who turns 22 later this month. Italy squad Goalkeepers: Angelo Peruzzi (Juventus), Gianluigi Buffon (Parma) Defenders: Christian Panucci (Real Madrid), Fabio Cannavaro (Parma), Moreno Torricelli (Fiorentina), Gianluca Pessotto (Juventus), Mark Iuliano (Juventus), Alessandro Nesta (Lazio), Paolo Maldini (AC Milan) Midfielders: Dino Baggio (Parma), Diego Fuser (Parma), Demetrio Albertini (AC Milan), Jonathan Bachini (Udinese), Sandro Cois (Fiorentina), Eusebio Di Francesco (AS Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (Bari) Forwards: Enrico Chiesa (Parma), Roberto Baggio (Inter Milan), Christian Vieri (Lazio), Francesco Totti (AS Roma) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ITALIAN CUP: Inter claims dramatic win Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Reuters News Service By JEFFREY DONOVAN ROME (January 27, 1999 11:06 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - Inter Milan staged a dramatic and unlikely comeback against Italy's hottest team on Wednesday, beating Lazio 5-2 in the San Siro to reach the semifinals of the Italian Cup 6-4 on aggregate. In the semis Inter will play Parma, which earlier beat Udinese 4-0 (6-3 on aggregate) with goals from Argentines Hernan Crespo, Juan Veron and Abel Balbo. In the other semifinal, Bologna, which overcame Juventus on Tuesday, will face the winner of Thursday's last quarter-final between Serie A leaders Fiorentina and second division Atalanta Bergamo. Inter, without an injured Ronaldo, trailed 2-1 from the first leg and fell further behind in the ninth minute when Italy striker Christian Vieri headed in a Giuseppe Favalli cross. Inter made it 1-1 on the night four minutes later when Frenchmen Benoit Cauet lifted a sweet 25-metre lob over goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani who had foolishly chased a loose ball out of his area. Youri Djorkaeff volleyed Inter ahead in the 25th minute but Attilio Lombardo, making his Lazio debut after his move from England's Crystal Palace, made it 2-2 nine minutes later. Lazio, who are second in the league after winning their last seven matches, came out furiously after the break and Inter had Gianluca Pagliuca to thank for keeping them at bay. After Djorkaeff made it 3-2 in the 69th with a blazing diagonal shot, Pagliuca made three saves in as many minutes from Giuseppe Pancaro, Ivan De La Pena and Guerino Gottardi. Then, seconds after coming on as a substitute seven minutes from time, Brazilian midfielder Ze Elias deflected a shot in off the referee to give Inter a 4-2 lead and 5-4 aggregate advantage. Lazio protested vehemently, claiming offside, and captain Alessandro Nesta was sent off for dissent. Inter made doubly sure of progress in the dying seconds with a blistering counter-attack, completed with a brilliant Roberto Baggio cross to set-up Francesco Moriero for a simple finish. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inter Milan 5 Cagliari 1 Roberto Baggio may have scored twice and laid on three other goals but his main contribution came in the 19th minute when he was tripped by Fabian O'Neil, a foul for which the Uruguayan was sent off. At the time Cagliari were leading through Roberto Muzzi's second-minute goal but quickly fell apart. Baggio levelled the scores with a spectacular free-kick in the 29th minute and when a similar effort was tipped on to the crossbar by Alessio Scarpi on the hour Croatian defender Dario Simic was on hand to make it 2-1. Argentine Diego Simeone struck with headers off Baggio corners in the 67th and 71st minutes before Baggio finished his day's work in the 77th. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inter, Parma lead deep-6 of season scoring mark Copyright © 1999 Nando Media Copyright © 1999 Reuters News Service By GIDEON LONG ROME (January 10, 1999 2:20 p.m. EST http://www.sportserver.com) - Inter Milan smoked Venezia 6-2, Parma won 6-3 at Piacenza and AS Roma lost 4-3 in the last minute at Cagliari as Italy's Serie A sides combined for a season-high 35 goals on Sunday. Chilean Ivan Zamorano claimed a hat-trick as an Inter side inspired by Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio crushed bottom club Venezia at the San Siro. Inter's victory erased memories of its defeat at Parma on Wednesday and lifted Mircea Lucescu's side into third place. Argentine forward Abel Balbo also scored three as Parma flattened Piacenza to move to the top of the table on goal difference, level on points with Fiorentina, which played Lazio in Rome later on Sunday. Even before the evening match, Sunday's tally of 35 goals was a record for the current season. The previous best of 34 was set the weekend before Christmas while the all-time record for the 18-team league stands at 48, recorded on Oct. 4, 1992. In sharp contrast to Inter and Parma's fireworks, fading champion Juventus toiled to a 1-1 draw at home against Bari while AC Milan had Germany's Christian Ziege sent off and had to come from behind to draw by the same scoreline at Empoli. Ronaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot three minutes into Inter's match after Venezia captain Gianluca Luppi had handled in the area. Filippo Maniero leveled the scores 14 minutes later to suggest the visitors might put up a fight but from then on the show belonged to Inter's forward line. Baggio exchanged passes with Ronaldo and stroked home a right-footed shot to make the score 2-1 before Ronaldo mesmerized three Venezia defenders and slipped a pass to Zamorano who scored Inter's third. The Chilean made the game safe before halftime with his second goal of the afternoon and completed his hat-trick with the first attack of the second half to make the score 5-1. Ronaldo added a sixth for his sixth goal of the season. Balbo proved that anything Zamorano can do he can do, too, grabbing his first hat-trick for Parma since his move from AS Roma in the summer. The veteran Argentine struck three times in 13 minutes after the break to wrap up what had, until then, been an evenly balanced match. French World Cup winner Alain Boghossian had put Parma in front with a shot which deflected off defender Paolo Cristallini but Simone Inzaghi, brother of Juventus's Italy striker Filippo, equalized two minutes later. Balbo made the score 2-1 on 51 minutes but again Piacenza equalized after two minutes -- this time through Cristallini. Balbo gave Parma the lead for the third time in the match after 63 minutes and this time there was no way back for a brave Piacenza side again facing a relegation scrap. Diego Fuser crossed from the left for Balbo to complete his hat-trick a minute later and then found the back of the net himself on 67 minutes to make the score 5-2. Inzaghi scored from the penalty spot to claim his seventh goal of the season -- just one less than his brother -- but Hernan Crespo restored Parma's three-goal lead with a goal in the 81st minute. Roma's game at Cagliari was a roller-coaster of an affair with the lead changing hands three times before the Sardinians grabbed a winner in the last minute. Roberto Muzzi confirmed himself as one of the most promising strikers in Italy with his 10th goal of the season, firing a header past goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti after just two minutes. Roma rallied and two goals on the counterattack from Marco Delvecchio put it in front before Uruguayan midfielder Fabian O'Neill equalized for Cagliari on the stroke of halftime. Then Cagliari edged ahead again, with Muzzi cutting through the visitors' defense to beat Chimenti. Carmine Gautieri looked to have earned Roma a point with an 81st-minute equalizer for 3-3 but O'Neill stole in seconds from the final whistle to hand Cagliari a dramatic victory.
