During the first anniversary of the republic at 14 July 1959, the notorious Kerkuk massacre took place. The active politicians and intellectuals of Iraqi Turkmen were killed with very wild and savage methods. Many of them were pulled behind the autos until death in the major streets of Kerkuk. The others were hanged alive over the electric cables besides the streets.

Any political organization in Iraq other than Ba'th party is prohibited. The opposition is not allowed. After uncovering an organisation, almost all the organisers will be put to death. The following Turkmen were accused of political activities and sentenced to death.

One of the policies of the Iraqi regime is not to appoint the non-members of the Bathist party in to the Military Academic Colleges. In spite of being the party members, the ethnic groups were not allowed to get such a position. The following list shows some of the high-ranking military Turkmen officers (who joined to the Military Academic Colleges before Bathist period) who were the victums of ethnic cleansing.

Kerkuk Citadel was containing about 2000 houses, which was inhabited almost completely by Turkmen. The Bathist regime demolished it in 1998.
